Week 2

This week started off with a lot of training. I completed a couple of the larger WEM medior module training courses before finally, on Wednesday afternoon, I got my first actual assignment. For the next couple of weeks, I will be working on a meeting logging application. I got started on making the application prototype and the required documentation for it , e.g., a design document, a flowchart for the data model, and so on.

Fun fact the Oldehove leans more than
the iconic tower of Pisa

During the week, I also got to see some local sights, like the Oldehove, a leaning and unfinished church in downtown Leeuwarden.

On Thursday, Mr. van Leersum came to visit us, and we talked about our experience here so far. He also helped me buy tickets for the next SC Heerenveen match that’s happening this weekend.

Friday was a day off from work, and the Easter holidays also began. I spent Friday going to the movies with Arttu and Riku.

As I mentioned before, I bought tickets for the football match between SC Heerenveen and Almere City. The game was on the 19th of April at around 20:00. I traveled with Arttu to Heerenveen around midday. We got to see some beautiful sights, as we mistakenly took the slower bus to Heerenveen, which took us on an hour-long journey through the Frisian countryside.

We spent most of the day walking around Heerenveen, seeing what it had to offer. I visited some retro game stores, the SC Heerenveen fan shop, and saw some sights like The Crackstate, an old Frisian estate and now a wedding chapel.

We got to the stadium well before the start of the match, as most stores started closing early. Even though we were there quite early, the number of people outside was astonishing. The stadium was almost sold out, even against bottom-of-the-table Almere City.

As for the match,  it was an action-packed 90 minutes. The game was beautiful, and the fans were electric. To the dismay of the traveling supporters, Almere City lost an even match, despite having two clear-cut chances to tie the game during the dying embers of the game. But for the Heerenveen fans, it was pure jubilation. The roar of the crowd after those missed chances was something I didn’t know 23,000 people could produce.

I left the Abe Lenstra Stadion a happy man and got back to our accommodation extremely late. So this Sunday will be a day of rest and chores for me.

With the chants of the Heerenveen faithful still ringing in my ears, this week draws to a close. Next week will start with a small break, as Monday is still part of the Easter holidays here.
